Transition Year Curriculum
Core Subjects studied throughout the year:
Maths (4 periods per week)
Gaeilge, English, French, Religion (3 periods per week)
Communications (2 periods per week)
Careers (1 period per week)
German (if intending to continue to Leaving Cert.)
Leaving Certificate Optional Subjects:
4 periods per week, rotating in 4 groups for approx 7-8 weeks or 3 periods per week rotating for 9/10 weeks:
Accounting, Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Geography, History,
Home Economics/Social & Scientific, Physics & Agricultural Science.
Non-Leaving Certificate Subjects and Short Courses (subject to timetabling and staff availability, not all will be available every year):
Architectural Studies, Art History, Classical Studies, Computer Studies and Powerpoint, Cork Culture & History, Crafts, Current Affairs, Environmental Studies, European Studies, Film Club & Film Studies, First Aid, Genetics, Home Crafts, Horticulture, Italian for Beginners, Japanese, Computer Keyboard Skills & Word Processing, Latin for Beginners, Law Studies, Local Studies, Mapping, Music Appreciation, Refugee Studies, Road & Driving Safety, Russian, Social and Health, Spanish, Sport-Movement-Dance, Mini Company/ Enterprise, Women’s Studies, Coracle Building, Dance, Drama, Film & Video production, First Aid, Heritage Studies, Make-up/Beauty/ Etiquette & Manners, Public Access to Law, Sign Language for the Deaf, Song-writing, Yoga, Massage and Relaxation, Young Social Innovators (YSI)
¨ Community Work (20 hours – one half day per week for 10 weeks)
¨ Work Experience (two-week block)
¨ Timetabled slot for Visiting Speakers and/or tutorial time
Approximately 60% of the time is devoted to academic subjects.
